JUNIOR FINEX
INTERNATIONAL FINANCE COMPETITION: PINOYS DID MAKE IT!
The Junior FINEX Committee of the Financial Executives (FINEX) Institute of the Philippines recently held its famous Inter- Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), now on its 11th year.
A day of excitement
The Finals were held on the 19th of October, 2009 at the Assembly Hall of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas with the presence of Hon. Amando M. Tetangco Jr, Governor of the BSP who generously gave an inspirational talk and has always been a great supporter of ICFC.
The day started with a welcome address by Mr. Jean d’Orival, Chairman of the FINEX ICFC Organizing Committee who paid a special tribute to the three schools from Northern Luzon that attended the Finals despite the devastation brought by typhoon “Pepeng” in their regions.
Following Gov. Tetangco’s keynote address, the grueling day of competition finally started. Four rounds of complex financial questions that lasted from 9 am until 5 pm. All to be answered in a limited time (150 seconds each question) with an audible countdown for the last few seconds and a buzzer that added to the stress of the already tense students!
Most schools came with a contingent of noisy supporters, the largest being from UP Diliman and De La Salle University Manila. The passion of the supporters and the suspense intensified as we got into the last round in the Finals. The top 4 teams were only separated by a few points. By the penultimate question, the suspense stopped as Ateneo could no longer be caught up with. But the screams didn’t stop as the supporters congratulated all the participants.
Following the competition itself was the official results announcement by Ms Jade Roxas-Divinagracia, Chair of the Board of Judges and the Awarding ceremony with the presence of Deputy Gov. Armando L. Suratos, and Mr. Bobby Borromeo, President of FINEX who then gave the closing remarks.
All then enjoyed a well-deserved cocktail in the Auditorium.
The Filipinos made it again!
For the third year in a row, FINEX invited some of the top Asian Universities to compete in the ICFC Finals, the idea being that our local students benchmark themselves against the regional elite. This year was even made more difficult by the first participation of the University of Hong Kong, ranked best in Asia.
The other foreign schools were National University of Singapore, Chulalongkorn University and Assumption University, both of Thailand. These are all well known for their excellence in Business and Finance education.
And for the third year in a row, the Pinoy Universities took the first 3 spots!
It is a great pride for all of us and a fantastic achievement for all the coaches and teachers in the Philippines.
The Rankings
Noteworthy was the strong performance of UP Iloilo who placed 5th. They are getting stronger every year and show that the provincial schools don’t need to have
any complexes when taking on Metro Manila!
