The Junior FINEX (JFINEX) Committee serves as the vehicle of the FINEX to support the activities of Finance organizations in different schools and universities particularly to promote awareness in financial management.
Initiatives:
1. Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC)
2. Campus Tour Talks
3. OJT/Job Placement
The Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition is an annual nationwide competition in finance organized by the Junior Finex Committee in partnership with JPMorgan Chase & Co. The ICFC is participated in by 80-85 colleges and universities across the Philippines and several foreign schools in Asia whose students prepare, review and compete based on CFA Level 1, CMA questions and other relevant, timely financial topics. The school teams compete in an elimination round in September, then the top 20 schools proceed to compete in the finals held in October. The overall goal of the ICFC is to upgrade the quality of finance education in the tertiary level. JPMorgan Chase & Co. funds entirely the ICFC and its other sub-committees.
Generally, the level of finance education at the tertiary level in colleges and universities across the country has not been consistent and up to par with global standards except for the few top private schools and state universities in Metro Manila. The most prestigious and sought after employers including top corporates and multinationals have concentrated their hiring of fresh graduates for high-level entry positions and developmental positions to graduates of these exclusive schools. The results of the Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition ("ICFC") conducted by the Junior Finex Committee continue to show the lack of level playing field amongst the school participants. This imbalance is likewise evident in the hiring practices of the financial services industry which has shown partiality to hiring students from the top private schools. The holding of the annual finance competition has encouraged a number of schools, particularly those in the provincial areas which would normally have students coming from low-income households, to strive to upgrade the standards of their curriculum and student performance in order for their schools to rank favorably in the ICFC.
Through the Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), FINEX aims to foster healthy competition between colleges and universities in the country. By leveling the playing field for finance students regardless of social status and geography, the ICFC equalizes the opportunity for bright and deserving students to pursue a financial career. With the added participation of some foreign schools, the ICFC also aims to influence and improve the standards of academic excellence of Philippine schools to world-class levels, challenging the local schools to upgrade their academic curriculum to be better if not at par with global standards. The ICFC will enhance classroom education for students of finance across social sectors and geographies, and enlighten students on their career choice for the future. The competition serves as the training ground for the students, from preparation during the eliminations until the final competition where the depth of their knowledge of finance is tested. The months of preparation serves as an effective training ground for future careers. The yearlong exercise where students train and collaborate with their coaches expands their knowledge of financial concepts and solutions and equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills that enhance their chances for employment or financial acumen.
The Eliminations is a daylong activity in a quiz bee set-up done simultaneously in different regions of the Philippines. Participants are grouped into teams representing each school and each team consists of 3 participants. In this specific activity, each team challenges other teams from the same region to advance to the next level.
The next level is the Finals; this is where the emerging winners from the different regions are gathered in Manila to challenge other emerging regional winners. The final competition has a similar format to the eliminations, the difference being the questions are solely difficult questions. The venue will be in Manila and only the finalists join the finals.
Campus Tour Talks: this activity in the program offers career guidance to the students which are made available to them during the road show. The campus tour talk is about an hour long talk that is given by the finance practitioners from FINEX and other reputable institutions on relevant and timely subjects. The topics for discussion are carefully selected beforehand by finance practitioners and by representatives of the school to ensure their applicability and relevance to their curriculum. During the Campus Tour talk, students are encouraged to send in their resumes which are entered in the database for OJT and Job Placement opportunities.
On-the-Job Training (OJT) and Job Placement: Finex provides assistance for internships, job placements and career development. The resumes gathered or sent to the foundation are kept in a database and are made available to FINEX members and member companies who are in need of OJTs or fresh graduates of finance. This activity is collaboration between the FINEX member companies and schools; it helps both the FINEX Member and the student who seeks to build up his resume.
